Project Overview

Design begins with an understanding of technological change and ways of communication in the future – a new, purely modern art space. The Shanxi Wisdom Science and Technology Museum is a collection of technology, art and space. The exhibition is designed to create a space as a whole piece of art, transforming the exhibition space into an art space, and simultaneously adds modern human elements. The exhibition centre space is highly open, transparent and artistic. This is not just a space for people to watch. It can also be touched and experienced.

Project Brief

The Shanxi Intelligent Hi-tech City Exhibition Centre is located in the University City Industrial Park of Shanxi Jinzhong Development Zone. It is the first “industry new city” integrating “wisdom, technology, health, industry and city”. Its China Merchants Exhibition Centre projects stories of different scenes by applying a large number of internationally advanced black technologies, presenting the future world created by the transformation of the smart technology industry.

The inspiration behind the design is a deeper understanding of technological change and the way the future communicates - a new and pure sense of modern art space. A true inspiration that drives this project to its goal is a quote by Gustave Flaubert, that art is becoming more and more technological, and technology is becoming more and more artistic. The two break up in the mountains, and one day they will meet again on the top of the mountain. The Shanxi Intelligent Hi-tech City Exhibition Centre is a collection of technology, art and space. It is not a regular exhibition centre for one to watch, but rather an interactive space.

Project Innovation/Need

Through the interrelationship of light, shadow, material and lines, it reflects various changes and creates different sensory experiences for the audience. It also locates an sculpture known as an Energy Rubik's Cube which symbolises change and imagination, while expressing the duality of purity and filtering, which is an interpretation of technology, the future, and design. The middle of the exhibition hall positions two arc-shaped light boxes with trees as prototypes. Three huge industrial energy masks are placed on both sides of these boxes to create exaggerated spatial perspective effect. Each energy mask has its own complete and unique theme, which is a separate individual. We designed these diverse subjects together and mobilise the emotional rhythm of the audience with rational spatial logic, as well as to achieve a high degree of integration of space and experience. This space was designed based on a large area of black and an ever-changing colours and light that projects the space a sense of modernity and future technology. It self-divides itself with its own set of colour tonality. The lighting in this space sets its own dimensions. It adopts the combination of key lighting and ambient lighting to create a quiet atmospheric space providing its own sense of privacy. We also added an art installation called the "Wen Guan Gong" onto the space to create a strong contrast colour grille to provide multiple visual depths for the wall.

Design Challenge

The first challenge that underwent this design process was the project timing. The project period was planned out to be in a time frame of two months. Unfortunately, the client reduced the it to 40 days. During this short period of time, we had to undergo multiple amendments within the dateline period. Therefore, this reduced period of time has been a great challenge to our team and created a huge impact in terms of pressure to Mr Liu Jie. To work in the most efficient manner, we had our design team communicate with the client as often as possible to ensure that everything is in order to reach the goal of the project.

The second challenge was the communication and understanding within the team. Due to shortage of time, the team has to offer their ours from their personal and family time. Thankfully towards the end of the project, we were able to provide and design the exhibition centre and exceeded the client's expectations. In fact, with the success of the project, we are able to gain trust and a better relationship with this client.

Sustainability

Sustainability was not a primary aspect we took during the design process of the exhibition centre. However, to keep the bright luminosity of the exhibition spaces, we included energy saving LED lights. The architecture of the exhibition spaces however was not part of our job scope, therefore, we were not able to include many other sustainable methods. The clients also did not highlight the sustainable importance to the project.
