Project Overview

The project is named "Security, Stability, Abundance, and Happiness". The designer hoped to create a comfortable living quality through the design so that people can achieve a stable state of mind. Since the client did not want the interior to be presented in a stereotypical or standardized style, the final theme is a modern Japanese style. The client loves tea ceremonies, so to bring out the style of tea ceremony in the design and to meet the demand for the collection, the designer reserved space in the living room and foyer for displaying the art collection. In addition, dark colors are used as the background so that the collection is highlighted. There are no complicated patterns or carvings in the public space, only light-colored wood grain flooring with cabinets of the same tone to create a stress-free atmosphere. In the private area, the bedside facade of the master bedroom color echoed the wood grain flooring.

Project Brief

"To bring people to a state of peace of mind.”

The project uses colors and materials to express Japanese tranquillity, allowing people to feel the aesthetics and philosophy of the tea ceremony in the design. There is no excessive decoration, only the wood grain flooring conveys the theme. In the public area, the collection cabinet in the living room fully expresses the client's preference for art. The foyer and living room are decorated with different materials such as stone and wood grain, and the spacious living room is an eye-catching feature. In the private area, the bedroom is decorated with simple colors and wood grain flooring extending from the living room, again highlighting the rustic style. The addition of rustic, wood grain, and non-monotonous paving is the key to the success of this project.

Project Innovation/Need

The project is based on the theme of wood grain, and the light and shadow are created by grating, architectural concrete, and glass. The subtle Japanese space also serves as a gathering space and collecting artworks. The cabinet in the foyer is specially designed to hold collectables or paintings. There is also a light fixture to display the collection. The chandeliers in the foyer and dining room are made of architectural concrete. The surface of the architectural concrete is unadorned, echoing the natural style preferred by the client and the TV wall. In addition, the sliding door from the kitchen to the public area is a transparent grille, however, from the outside, it looks just like the mirror surface of the refrigerator, showing a visual extension. At the same time, the client can keep an eye on the safety of children playing in the living room through the transparent grille.

Design Challenge

There were two challenges in this project. One was to change the bathroom from a 3-piece to a 4-piece with a bathtub. The designer spent a lot of time finding the right size bathtub because of the need to install extra objects in the limited space. The other is the wood-grained beam in the living room had to be kept from lowering the ceiling height to prevent people from feeling pressured. And the beam next to it is reserved for different materials.

Sustainability

The project adopts system cabinets certified for formaldehyde content in Europe. The living room TV wall is painted with Italian natural mineral paint, which has a natural texture and pores on its surface to absorb suspended particles and purify the air. Furthermore, the project is on a higher floor, so the lighting and ventilation are excellent. The designer kept the windows to provide sufficient natural lighting in the living room, dining table, and bedrooms. At the same time, the design is not overly decorated, so light can run evenly through the room, creating the effect of enlarging the space.
