Project Overview

The client is a couple who loves the Harry Potter series of novels. They wanted the design team to express the imagery of the wizarding world in interior design. To do so, the design team recalled the movie scenes, such as Platform Nine and Three-Quarters and the dome of Hogwarts restaurant, and restored and reproduced them in the space. In addition, the design team also planned the lighting through the arrangement of flat and concave surfaces to interpret the magic but realistic residence.

Project Brief

In the movie, Professor Dumbledore said to Harry Potter: “People cannot just live in a dream, you cannot rely on dreams and forget about life.” The residence is the carrier of the occupant's dream and the construction of life. In this project, the designer used the client's favorite Harry Potter movie as the theme. They extracted scenes from the film and translated certain unforgettable moments into the interior design. The design team reinterpreted the classic scenes from the text through the dome, classical light fixtures, and cultural stone walls. The memories of the magical world seem to be moving with the occupants. On the other hand, the master bedroom is designed in European style. The design team used the client's favorite "Turkish blue" as the main tone, together with European-style system cabinetry, characteristic wallpaper, and herringbone wood grain to form a quiet yet lively sleeping space.

Project Innovation/Need

In contrast to the contemporary residential style, the clients proposed to create a Harry Potter-themed space with an industrial style. Therefore, the core of the project was to integrate the gritty industrial style with the fantasy world of magic. The design team searched for texts and film clips to capture the architectural style of Hogwarts. They translated the film's dome into the living room ceiling and TV wall, then conceal light strips to create visual depth and suspension. As for the wall, it is quoted from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. The design team used cultural stones to create a classical and retro atmosphere. In addition, they concealed the bathroom door panel to maintain consistency. Furthermore, to provide ample space for the cat, the design team added laminates and cat caves on the living room TV wall and cabinets.

Design Challenge

Connecting the magical world to reality was a major challenge for this project. To do so, the design team reread the text and borrowed features from Hogwarts architecture. Moreover, the process of designing must have been different from the original version and the final version. Therefore, incorporating new elements into the space while maintaining the Harry Potter style during construction was a challenge for the design team in terms of color, aesthetics, and functionality.

Sustainability

The wood panels of this project are E1 grade low formaldehyde material. Meanwhile, the environmentally friendly system cabinetries can eliminate the need for new construction and staining to reduce formaldehyde contamination during interior construction. In addition, it is worth mentioning that the project also used non-toxic natural materials such as woodwork, veneer, cultural stone, and fair-faced concrete paint on the ceiling and wall elevation. Lastly, the design team strictly controls each procedure during the construction to protect the health and mood of the clients.
