Project Overview
Hangzhou is a millennia-old city boasting vibrant and intoxicating natural sceneries that complement urban life aesthetics. Ancient and modern natural aesthetics merge and evolve here, carrying the history and spirit of the city. The project is the sales center of Zonhow Yuehe Gold Block, located in the CBD of Chengdong New City, Hangzhou. To be specific, it lies at the intersection of Huanzhan East Road and Huancheng North Road.

Project Brief
Opening the entrance door, elegant and natural gray-green tone comes into view. Illuminated by varying lighting, the backdrop wall made of white sand-textured stones in the reception area produces a layered effect. The whole foyer appears like an intriguing book to be read and interpreted.
A sculpture stands beside the reception counter. Its smooth and curved shape aims to articulate that everything in the world is flowing and active. With the curved flowing form reflecting glow, the sculpture generates a striking contrast with the matrix-like structure at the back, highlighting spatial layers and enhancing visitors’ dialogue with art.
Project Need
The overall space looks very modern and simplistic, with harmonious lines and planes, as well as natural and smooth transitions. The suspended ceiling is embellished with a metal ring-shaped installation that perfectly combines with the gyro-like cone-shaped property model table below it. The installation conveys the symbolic meaning of eternal flow, whilst also echoing the theme expressed by the sculpture in the foyer. With the line of sight shifting 90 degrees, visitors can capture that large floor-to-ceiling glass windows introduce lively sunlight into the interior.
White sand-textured wall, characterized by fashionable and rhythmically dense grains and a gentle touch, attracts perceptual and visual attention.
Design Challenge
Original pure tension of the building extends from the outside to the interior. Conditioned by constraints, the design team attempted to adopt layered deconstruction techniques to break homogeneous spatial images and layouts of conventional sales spaces. The orderly layers of overlapped stones behind the reception counter enable this sales center to be distinct from others, effectively enhancing spatial experiences.
The building was originally divided according to the functional requirements of shop. As a result, shear structural walls are distributed throughout the space in an irregular manner, and the height of ceiling is fettered by structural beams. Inclined planes creatively replace partition walls, hence giving rise to an open configuration that helps eliminate limitations.
Dark gray glossy stones on the ground reflect beige-white stone walls, just like water’s surface that continues to extend while mirroring lines and shapes of walls. Separated by layered walls, the shiny floor warps charming dynamic lights, achieving a subtle balance between lightness and heaviness.
Dominant hidden linear lighting outlines the background of wall. The interplay of bright light and dark shadows produces rhythms and dynamics, and meanwhile enriches the layers of the simplistic space.
Large-area glass curtain wall brings in sufficient natural daylight, and also provides an open view towards both the inside and the outside. In this way, the entire space reveals a clean, tranquil ambience.
Sustainability
At the preliminary stage, the designers laid much emphasis on sustainability, and thus proposed utilizing low-carbon, environment-friendly and recyclable materials. At the later operational stage, by making partial transformations, the project is able to achieve a perfect and effective functional transition from a sales center for display into a leisure venue for dwellers, hence averting waste of materials and environmental pollution stemming from mass construction on the site.
Recyclable materials were applied to the space as many as possible, in an effort to avoid excessive waste or pollution. Large-area glass curtain wall renders the overall interior environment healthier and more dynamic. Through it, the space builds a close dialogue with nature, and people both indoors and outdoors can experience the whole spatial outline while feeling comfortable and pleasant to commune with nature. Further to this, such design is also conducive to electricity consumption decline.

Open to all international projects this award celebrates innovative and creative building interiors, with consideration given to space creation and planning, furnishings, finishes, aesthetic presentation and functionality. Consideration also given to space allocation, flow, building services, lighting, fixtures, flooring, colours, furnishings and surface finishes.
