Project Brief

The average Australian buys a new barbeque every five years - which doesn’t make for a great frequency of visitation. Our brief was to bring the merchandise to life, increase visitations and increase transaction size - while keeping fitout costs down.

Using our design for the 500 sqm Barbeques Galore Express store as a starting point we’ve expanded the offer to this 1000sqm Barbeques Galore Explore Store.

Project Innovation/Need

Our strategy was to increase visitation by focusing more on consumables. As well as gas and solid fuels, Barbeques Galore sells a huge range of accessories, sauces, marinades and rubs. We brought all of these right to centre front, creating an “entry and exit through gift store.”

The Steakhouse expresses the idea of a central cooking demo as an oversized steel structure while the Brewhouse is a natural addition, housing home brew kits, kombucha and ginger beer. There are other range extensions with all kinds of outdoor merchandise from Sunnylife, Skullcandy and more.

All of this leaves the perimeter of the store to the stars of the show, the barbeques themselves. Having them on the walls allows us to tell the product stories through simple white-on-black graphics including exploded diagrams and cooking hints.

Design Challenge

The challenge is the space itself. Everton Park is one of a new breeds of bulky goods centres featuring cavernous, warehouse-like spaces with high ceilings, intertenancy walls that don’t go to the roof, and common air conditioning.
An environment like this is no place for subtlety- hence the huge shed-like frameworks that form the centrepiece. A strong element like this provides a visual focus and stops the retail offer being dwarfed by the volume of the space.

Sustainability

The fitout budget is low, and this is achieved by sparing use of materials. There are virtually no wall fixtures, with the merchandise itself being the fitout. Here, we’ve used existing hi-bay lights for efficient illumination, supplemented by just two rows of LED tracks along the walls. De-fit at the end of the tenancy will be simple, with most of the elements being re-usable and transportable – the existing concrete floor was used so no floor finishes will need to be demolished.
