Project Overview

The beauty and tranquillity of Eaglemont, a peaceful and quiet neighbourhood with tree lined streets and city views, flows into Casa Luna, which has been designed with feng shui principles to channel qi (energy) through the house. Through building design, spatial arrangements and material palette, Casa Luna optimises the flow of energy for peaceful, prosperous living.

Project Brief

The homeowners, who established Australian tapware company Sussex, engaged us to design their new house for their growing family of six. They wanted serene and transcendent spaces, an abundance of natural light, connections to nature and views of the moon and night sky. We worked closely with a feng shui master in the early design stages to ensure the building and layout balanced the harmonising forces of yin and yang to maximise positive energy potential.

Project Innovation/Need

Casa Luna is designed with feng shui principles to optimise the flow of qi (energy) into and through the house for peaceful, prosperous living. Outside, the strong geometric forms are finished with a smooth, light concrete render and textured, dark stained timber. Inside, tranquil and transcendent spaces have an abundance of natural light, connections to nature and views of the moon and night sky. Materiality is inspired by the moon, with matte and non-reflective surfaces such as limestone, marble, granite and terrazzo. The material and colour palette also incorporates the five feng shui elements (fire, earth, metal, water, wood), and balances yin and yang and their symbolism of the moon and sun respectively. Deep, moody tonal materials suggest the atmosphere of moonlight, while soft tans and burnt oranges evoke a solar eclipse.

Design Challenge

Ensuring that the building and layout balanced the harmonising forces of yin and yang to maximise positive energy potential was paramount. Casa Luna is a new family home with serene and transcendent spaces, an abundance of natural light and views of the night sky for homeowners who really enjoy moonlight and love looking at the moon each night. As home to the founders of Sussex tapware, custom door handles and brass detailing were designed to complement the craft and quality of Sussex tapware, showcased in the kitchen, laundry and bathrooms throughout the home.

Sustainability

We have always designed with the intention to withstand the test of time. Our interiors have the intention to be timely, yet timeless. The concept here perfectly suited our design philosophy as where able, everything is sourced locally supporting local businesses and trades. With the special connection to Sussex tapware — Australia’s first and only carbon neutral tapware manufacturer, it was paramount the products featured throughout the home, creating some of the most heavenly bathroom experiences to live a happy, prosperous, healthy life.
