Project Overview

A night stroll through the city of Tokyo is the vision behind Sakura. The interior romanticises a hidden gem while exploring the alleyway of Tokyo, seemingly crafted from the hue of blue, grey and beams of blossom pink, it is masterfully lit; a world unto itself.

Project Brief

• We injected an air of a typical night scene of Tokyo neighbourhood into a shopping mall eatery, creating an open space that visually bleeds into the adjacent space seamlessly.
• Site condition with an escalator towering over the space presented us with a design opportunity to celebrate it by turning it into a portal with quirky pink neon sign. What could be more Tokyo than that?
• It is a mixed of industrial materials with a monochromatic background to create an interior reminiscent of an alleyway in Tokyo. On stepping inside through a tunnel-like entrance, customers encounter a space with an urban quality replete with concrete walls and granite flooring with strokes of cobalt blue mimicking poetic night scene. These are softened by wooden touches in the entry bulkhead and the furnishing
• Anchored by a beaming Sakura tree, the space occurs around it which naturally divided the space into zones.
• We suspended a blue ceiling feature as a metaphor of the neon signs that create such a strong visual on the bustling streets of Tokyo.
• Within the landscape of a chaotic, metropolitan city, Sakura is poetic space that would make each diner feel as if they were a character in the scenery

Project Innovation/Need

• At Sakura, honesty and nostalgic is the underlying design theme that creates an evolving customer experience.
• Through careful selection of finishes, styles and elements, the space expands, stimulating emotions of tradition, but is still exciting and modern.
• Highly reflective smoke mirror has been cleverly incorporated into the design to create an illusion of a dimensional night scene.
• Multiple spaces offer distinct experiences, with attention to detail that defines each.
• The tatami inspired seating helps to extend the space, forming a transition where the indoor and outdoor boundary is blurred.
• The interior design brings disparate elements together that are cleverly blended yet still feels familiar.
• Colours are carefully but fearlessly selected to punctuate, imbuing a night scene that is often poetic and welcoming.
• A level of modernity, combined with the respect for tradition, will make it intriguingly unique.
• A dialogue between Japanese traditions and contemporary details defines this space.

Design Challenge

• Inspired to create a sensory narrative, Sakura is dared to be different.
• Whimsical and uniqueness creates an evolving customer experience. It successfully juxtaposes colour and style, allowing each to shine, creating an immersive experience.
• The courageous design results in an undeniably unique dining experience, where the space intrigues and delights.
• Sakura is a thoughtfully detailed, cinematically coherent space that gives permission for diners to get lost in their senses for a moment or two
• The intent is delivering a seamless experience to their diners as the design inherently respects and reflects the cuisine they serve up.

Sustainability

• Our Sustainability strategy is focused on the areas where we can directly make the greatest difference: that is creating low carbon, sustainable design that are resilient to climate change.
• Where possible Specify Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) to all paints,
• While selecting finishes consider Stewardship Programs that allow for take-back/recycling at end of use.
• Specify LED lighting rather than metal halide or fluorescent with control gear, sensors & timers
• Encourage client to specify equipment with the highest Energy Star rating possible
