Project Brief

The project brief was to create spaces that members could connect with, feel proud of and that celebrated the unions proud history. The Lighting design in this space complements the interior architecture, enhancing the construction and industrial materials selected by spaceOS. Aimed at being appealing to both visitors and members alike, the lighting was designed to be practical at task areas and used to lead and guide new visitors through the various spaces.

Project Innovation/Need

The lighting in the space is not the hero, the space itself is. The lighting throughout the space is meticulously concealed within joinery and celling details and fittings with low glare optics selected to maximise comfort. The feature wall showcasing the Melbourne skyline is treated with motorised and tuneable light fitting which move and change colour temperature to represent the change of daylight on the Melbourne skyline. This creates a very comfortable work environment, especially for an area with minimal natural light.

Design Challenge

With no natural daylight, the lighting installation to Reception / Membership area not only had to be highly practical but needed to feel welcoming to any visitors. The desk has a bespoke 10-meter-long copper pendant guiding visitors to the desks and providing a softer ambient light source to be purposely in contrast to the more industrial and practical types in the surrounding space. This piece was designed and manufactured locally which was important to the client’s ethos of the project.

The Honour Board was one of the best designed elements in the space but also one of the most challenging because of the level of detail and coordination required. Working very close with a local manufacturer and following several meetings between all parties involved lighting was integrated within the metal panels to create a beautiful piece that celebrated the history of CFMEU.

Sustainability

All lighting specified in the project has exceptionally high efficiency and along with a full automated lighting control system the power consumption of the project is extremely low.

All linear pendants have been designed by Glowing Structures and manufactured locally by Random Spaces.
