Project Overview
When international co-working space company, The Hive, were looking to establish their roots in Melbourne, they reached out to Concept to create their first Australian venue. Finding the perfect location was the first step, with The Hive choosing an older warehouse in the heart of Collingwood.
An abundance of natural light, high ceilings, sustainable material and abundant greenery create a biophilic environment that promotes productivity and offers a unique co-working space for businesses to thrive.

Project Brief
Being a co-working space, The Hive needed to create an environment where different types of workers and working styles could thrive.
Collaboration spaces, meeting rooms and private offices were all created to provide a seamless office feel. Workers have the option of hot desking, having a dedicated desk or having a private office for a small team.
Project Innovation/Need
This was the first Hive location in Australia, so it needed to make an impact!
The light filled 1,300sqm open plan converted warehouse space offers not only a beautiful working environment but an assortment of amenities like a café, bike storage, showers, phone booths, community events and yoga, all on site.
Impressive additions aside, The Hive offers the functional requirements necessary, including large private offices for growing teams, hot desks and dedicated desks, meeting rooms and event and conference spaces.
Embracing a natural palette incorporating generous use of wood, glass and metal, the design honours it's industrial soap factory heritage. The bold introduction of mature trees provides abundant greenery, both softening the space and increasing it's environmental impact. With a modern blend of functionality and form, The Hive successfully attracts and maintains its clientele.
Located in the middle of Collingwood’s fashion and creative community, The Hive certainly made an entrance.
Design Challenge
Although integration of the old with the new proved challenging, intense collaboration with stakeholders and local council saw a smooth transformation of the warehouse into a beautiful multi-functioning workplace that met The Hive’s values, continuing their global presence and proving a standout space against competitors.
Sustainability
The Hive is an innovative co-working space who wanted to ensure they were making sustainable decisions during the design process.
Concept took the exciting and sustainable opportunity to not only preserve but in fact highlight in the design the character of the existing warehouse structure’s raw timber beams and polished concrete floors.
Furthermore, established trees and greenery throughout provide not just a pleasing environment but a recognition of the positive environmental impact of incorporating biophilia into the design.
Interior Design - Co-Working & Studio Space
This award celebrates innovative and creative building interiors, with consideration given to space creation and planning, furnishings, finishes, aesthetic presentation and functionality. Consideration also given to space allocation, traffic flow, building services, lighting, fixtures, flooring, colours, furnishings and surface finishes.
